Monday Morning Quarterbacking the World Cup
It's all about Strategy and Execution - Using the Right Players

To borrow a phrase from America's "football," we've been doing some Monday morning quarterbacking in the office today. The Nextiny Marketing team has been mesmerized by the World Cup competition for weeks.

Our Mastermind of Success Gabriel Marguglio is an absolute "superfan" and a native of Argentina who is proud of the great run his home country earned during this year's World Cup. (You might be interested in his post on our blog a few weeks ago: 5 Things the World Cup and Inbound Marketing Have in Common.) However, in retrospect, as we talked around the water cooler today, we discovered additional parallels between yesterday's ultimate soccer game and our world of digital marketing strategies. Afterall, it always comes down to proper execution of your game plan by the right players.

Ironically, Germany and Argentina competed against each other in the 1990 World Cup Championship game. It was the last time both teams competed in the finals, so both countries had 24 years to prepare for yesterday's game, in theory. A few basic comparisons we might offer:

Screen_Shot_2014-07-14_at_5.54.22_PM.pngGermany:

  • Recruited the best players for over two decades
  • Played together as a team
  • Allocated the playing time of key players, saving resources - in this case, Mario Goetze - for the right moment to pull out a win!

Their years of incremental success contributed in Germany's victory.

Argentina:

  • Assembled their team over the past four years
  • Focused on one star player: Lionel Messi
  • Brought together players from all over the world, who had not regularly played together

As Argentina learned yesterday, having great athletes doesn't necessary mean that they will play well together without a master plan.

With the respect to the World Cup, the players may celebrate every win, but a championship - achieved by the right players working together within a unified strategy - is the ultimate goal.

In our world, increasing the traffic to your website is great, but don't you truly want more customers or increased sales?

It's proven that Blogging, Social Media, Website Landing Pages and Email Marketing are the key players today. Yes, you can perform all these tasks separately, using various tools and trying to identify scattered results. But there is a better way...
